"My child arrived just the other day,
He came through the world in the usual way.
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay.
He learned to walk while I was away.
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew,
He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad.
You know I'm gonna be like you."
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man on the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
were gonna have a good time then."
My son turned ten just the other day.
He said, "Thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play.
Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do." He said, "That's ok."
And he walked away, but his smile never dimmed, and
Said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah.
You know I'm gonna be like him."
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man on the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
were gonna have a good time then."
Well, he came from college just the other day,
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile,
"What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys.
See you later. Can I have them please?"
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man on the moon.
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
were gonna have a good time then."
I've long since retired and my son's moved away.
I called him up just the other day.
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind."
He said, "I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time.
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kid's have the flu,
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad.
It's been sure nice talking to you."
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me,
He'd grown up just like me.
My boy was just like me.
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man on the moon.
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
you know well have a good time then."
Want a copy of this? I'll send ya a CD with all my Chapin vids on it! Send me a message, invite me as a friend. We'll talk! http://www.youtube.com/group/h... '>http://www.youtube.com/group/h... Story of my own...I went with a friend to see Harry in 1981, at the O'Keefe Centre (now renamed Hummingbird).I was livin in Toronto at the time. He played Hamilton Place shortly after, and this concert was made into a tv program. The show was amazing, of course. After the show, he stood out in the lobby, as he'd promised, and signed autographs for any and all who wanted to meet him. Apparently he did this at every concert. Good platform to also encourage donations to his World Hunger project. Anyways, the lineup to see him was huge, of course, and, knowing that we would be seeing him again, at Ontario Place outdoor theatre in August 81, (a smaller venue), we decided we'd skip trying to meet him this night, and do it after the Ontario Place show. "..we're gunna have a good time then....."
July 16th, 1981 the music stopped.

This has always been a great song

What's with all the racism? Moral of the song is a dad can neglect the kid and he'll turn out just fine. It's very optimistic. Just as long as you work and make the dough. Of course, the black dudes leave entirely, and don't provide any support. Leave the kid to be raised on the welfare. Well it worked for the future Prez. His old man went back to Africa to get started on a harem. Barry was raised by his white mom. No that's not right, it was his grandparents after she took off as well.

So the annoying kid was just like the Dad. So it worked out. Earn the dough and the kid will raise himself. Even gave him some grandkids. Fantastic!!!

I so admire deep thinkers.

I can see see you are bombarded by interesting
people seeking you out for your words of wisdom.
The secret to this song are the words of a tragic reality, and understanding the meaning
of those words is what it's all about.
It's a shame you missed it!
