Tribute to King Kalakaua

Ukulele Videos

A video I made in honor of King Kalakaua of Hawai'i. King Kalakaua of Hawai'i was an accomplished composer, inventor, fireman, historian, statesman, editor, publisher and author. He was also the first foreign monarch to visit the United States and Japan and the first king to circumnavigate around the globe. He was interested in science and had signed the first charters for Hawaiian Telephone Co. and the Hawaiian Eletric Co. He had tried to industralize his kingdom and 'Iolani Palace, the residence that he built, was electricified before the White House and Buckingham Palace. He had built an extensive railroad system, modernized the Royal Guards, sponsored organized labor unions, and tried to build an Asian Federation of Nations with Emperor Meiji of Japan. He also unbanned the hula, built the Royal Hawaiian Opera House and Queen Kapi'olani Park, and tried to promote Hawaiian independence at home and abroad.

Forever greatful to you King Kalakaua for letting my people into your beautiful nation. You will always be my most beloved monarch.

ALERT Please Protest the movie, "The Barbarian Princess". It is not a documentary but a "historical drama" based on the life of Princess Ka'iulani but it grossly distorts history and does not even include Robert Wilcox or Prince Kawananana-- her fiance in 1897. Please also boycott any lectures and classes with Puakea Nogelmeier, who is not even a Kama'aina or Hawaiian, because he was the one that approved the script and refused to allow Native Hawaiian input in the script.
