Johnny Marvin - Cryin' For The Carolines, 1930

Ukulele Videos

Johnny MARVIN (né John Senator Marvin); b. 1897 in Butler, Indian Territory, USA (now Oklahoma); d. 1945 in North Hollywood, California (heart attack). In the 1920s, he was one of the most celebrated ukulele performers and crooners of the era. Billing himself as "Honey Duke and His Uke" then as "Johnny Marvin, the Ukulele Ace" his recorded output was prodigious. Among his many hits from the 1920s: "Oh How She Could Play the Ukulele," "Red Lips, Kiss My Blues Away," "If You See Sally," "There's Something Nice About Everyone (But There's Everything Nice About You)" and many others. He even had a brand of ukulele named for him, which sported his face on the headstock and was noted for its unique airplane-shaped bridge. As the ukulele craze of the 20s faded, Marvin retired. When the stock market crashed he lost his savings and came out of retirement, reinventing himself as a cowboy songwriting partner to Gene Autry, providing him with a second equally noteworthy career that lasted until his death. Inducted into the Ukulele Hall of Fame in 2003. ------------------------ ------------------------------- The first recording of the song was made in December 1929, by Ruth Etting. Soon „Cryin' For The Carolines" joined the long list of Harry Warren's great hits, performed by the leading American orchestras of the Jazz Age (Ben Bernie, Fred Waring, Ben Pollack or Paul Whiteman). In my opinion, the hereby Johnny Marvin's rendition belongs to the deepest and most moving interpretations of this tune. ----------------------------- --------------------------- Recording: Johnny Marvin -- Cryin' For The Carolines (from "Spring Is Here"); (Words by Sam H. Lewis and Joe Young, Music by Harry Warren), HMV 1930

He's means Carolines i.e. North and South. Songs about the south were very popular at this time.

Hi B., Well, I have no idea who or what he means. Maybe: both parts of the state of Carolina? Or - some two women he loved, each of whom holding the name of "Caroline" (a rare case, though...). Who knows the secrets of the artist' s heart?

A haunting melody. I imagine he means the Carolinas, as in North and South. Or ladies named Caroline? His rehab after the crash of'29 makes me wonder what life will be like after the predicted crash of...2008? 2009?
