Actually he has done American accents for years. Search for The Crystal Cube here on YouTube and see him doing a pseudo sci-fi scene with Emma Thompson back in the early 80s.

He's been around and at the top of his game for over 20yrs, it's just that America found out who he is with those movies :-P No offence, it's just he's part of the british culture...like buckingham palace, red double decker buses, wimbledon, cricket and bad teeth (apparently!) :-D
