Haleakala Hazards

Ukulele Videos

One of the most popular things to do while on Maui is to see the spectacular sunrise on top of Haleakala and then ride a bike down the old Volcano. People are getting injured and even killed while experiencing this piece of paradise. Some bike tour companies are not educating their riders about the hazards before putting them on bikes and local residence are mad. It's the peoples fault. Learn to ride a bike, then go on those tours. It ain't no one's fault but your own. If you crash on those bikes, maybe you should have went on a whale watching tour. Those who did crash because you can't ride, you fell, you are in control of your bike, not the other way around!!! It's only a bike ride. People like Muchetti should talk about the cars breaking the law by speeding, or mind his own business!!!

If people that do the ride down on the road were regular bike riders, it would probably be a lot less of an issue. A more scenic way is to go on a mountain bike on the dirt road down, but what do you expect from disneyland tourists that pay a guided service and get fully pampered? They can't begin to do some adventure on their own that would require some true skills and fitness.

Ok, we just finished our bike ride today. It was a little scary getting started, extremely cold at the top which we expected. It began to rain & we were not prepared for but should have expected. We did have a problem with the map they provided. It was more difficult than we expected and needed a better map, or would have brought our own. We got extremely lost, as did quite a few others from our group. It was a wonderful trip. I suggest taking your own map & use their rain gear, pack & pants.

Just how dangerous is it riding down the volcano. We are going for the first time at Christmas which I'm sure will be plenty crowded.

That's the point. Jsut because you have the bigger vehicle, doesn't make you king of the road. The road is built for vehicles of all sort. You can't just run over someone just because they are in your way and you are bigger. Be responsible for your actions in a dangerous vehicle.

I can dig cycling as much as the next guy but let us not forget who the roads were designed & built for. EVERYONE needs to make safety their first consideration. You don't have to be a Harvard grad to understand that an argument with 3000 lbs. of steel traveling at 30 MPH is one you're going to lose. And putting your 8 year old children in the path of that mass of steel is just plain irresponsible. "Born to be wild" doesn't mean "destined to be a cripple".

It's unfortunate that the bike groups get all this negetive criticism. For one for safety's sake it is the bigger, faster, more dangerous cars on the road that need to be cautious of the bikers. Even the camerman is shown passing double yellows on blind corners. And honking seems as if it would dangerously startle a biker more than anything else. Drivers, please respect the bikers and the industry. It isn't their intent to upset anyone and there is little reason why people should be upset.
