Once dairy cows are too old to be commercially viable they are commonly sold to slaughter for hamburger meat. Look it up.

Where are all the calves? Pregnant, milking moms and no babies. Hmmm, oh yeah, they are sent off to the veal farms. Not nursing with their mothers, but yanked away at the first day of birth so the mothers can keep making milk for humans. Horrible!

Farmers keep old dairy cows? Most dairies are run as a business and are for profit. They don't just keep cows that don't serve a purpose. Sorry, the idea is nice though. Cows would make great pets!
