It isn't a sporting event. The bear decides not to take the calculated risk of pushing its advantages of size and weight against the ferocity of the cougar. It is wise...the bear cannot afford to sustain life threatening injuries, whether it should win the encounter or not. It is likely it would triumph, but at what cost? the bear is big and well fed, it is not worth the gamble.
