Earl had one of the best and biggest alto sounds

yes it has that great "Bebop" intro but is really the structure of "The anniversary song"

Prob. very influenced by Ben W & Hawk w/all that vibrato and rasp. That so called "gut bucket or barrel house" sound. Try to find and listen to the sides w/Teddy Wilson,Byas in1944 w/"Twilite in Teheran".He was a sax-acr'O'bat.He went into the more commercial Popular mode after the mid 1940s.

love this traditional romanian tune... and even more beautiful jazz arrangement! i heard some other jazz musicians trying to arrange this song, but did not come as good as this. pure genius :)

Earl Bostic's music may not have appealed to everybody around his era, but it can't be denied that he was one of the few jazz and R&B innovators. I loved that warm gutsy rasp that he delivered from his saxophone, it's a shame that he's no longer with us.

Does anyone have CRACKED ICE by Earl Bostic that they would be willing to post? I haven't heard it since the mid-fifties and would really enjoy listening to it again to.

Watch his intro, it's the same intro as Dizzy Gillespie's 'Be Bop'!

This is the guy who's music conviced me to stick with the alto.

Earl appeared in Toledo, Ohio about a month before his death. I found out about Earl through friends who met him when he came into their restaurant in Toledo. His sax style got me back to playing my sax and I use some of his arrangements. Great stuff! |
