Ruth Etting - Shakin' The Blues Away

Ukulele Videos

Ruth Etting was an immensely popular singer in the 20's and early 30's. During her tragic life, she starred on Broadway and made movies in Hollywood. Her recording career lasted ten years, and in that period she worked with all top musicians. This great record (a Ziegfeld Follies tune which was her big break) was made for Columbia on August 30th, 1927.

At first sight I see not much resemblance between the two voices, but I haven't heard Bailey in this, so I'm unable to compare.

She sounds an awful lot like Mildred Bailey, who also recorded this song, or maybe Mildred was channeling Ruth.

Beautiful recording - obviously some of the words not so politically correct anymore, to say the least! Sounds like the singer Maude Maggart has used Ruth Etting as a template for her own work. Just saw the Doris Day "biopic" - of course it has been whitewashed as those things always are. Etting's life would make a fascinating film now.

"Love me or leave me" was the movie bio of singer Ruth Etting, who was NOT an alcoholic. "With a song in my heart" was the movie bio of singer Jane Froman, who WAS an alcoholic.

I seriously doubt that! Watch the film.

I haven't seen the film for many years, but that was the basis of the law suit. Since she won the case perhaps the film was re-edited.

There is nothing in that film that even implies that Etting was a drunk. Maybe you'd better watch it with that in mind.
