Most of the early version are preformed from a female point of view. The song is most likely about the hard life of a woman who is a porstitue working in New Orleans and who ends up killing herself. This is probably because she marries a gambler and sinks into debt. the first person to make the song somewhat famous was probably leadbelly and later bob dylan and then the animals. And blues isnt about being black. it has NOTHING to do with race.
