For the first year I didn't use an athame either. I didn't use one for no other reason than I don't like weapons. I eventually brought one in, but I only use it for my Samhain rites. It's taken me a while to get comfortable with it. Like you, I prefer the wand.

Yeah I actually don't use an athame, just a wand in my opinion they are interchangeable, they both kind of have the same uses. :D

Remember that no tools are absolutely necessary. They help, but you could do rituals without any of them. I have before, and I will again.

I find it interesting that she mention the place to whence we return as being a great ocean. Back in 1999 I had an operation for a muscle biopsy and my heart stopped because I was so afraid of needles. I actually died on the operating table and my parents wouldn't tell me for years after. All I remember was a great feeling much akin to floating on a warm ocean under the sun. The only place I felt I could ever call home.

Hm, I have been a practicing Wiccan for the last 7 years, and I've never found it necessary to have a wand. The athame (blade) can do that just the same. But as she says, you can do it even by your mind or by simply a finger. But I think she forgot to mention that the athame could be used in space of the wand as well.
