Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2008/02/21/Unco... Hoover Institution Senior Fellow Thomas Sowell argues that economic differences between working men and women are not generally due to employer discrimination, as is widely alleged. ----- Peter Robinson speaks with Thomas Sowell about his new book Economic Facts and Fallacies in which Sowell exposes some of the most popular fallacies about economic issues. Sowell takes on the conventional thinking on a wide swath of America's economic life, from male-female economic differences to income stagnation, executive pay, and social mobility to economics of higher education. In all cases he demonstrates how economics relates to the social issues that deeply affect our country - Hoover Institution Thomas Sowell is an American economist, political writer, and commentator. He is currently a senior fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. In 1990, he won the Francis Boyer Award, presented by the American Enterprise Institute. Thomas Sowell is probably THE premier public intellectual currently living. He offers a fact-based analysis of common ideological myths that are often accepted as common wisdom. My favorite book of his is "Black Rednecks and White Liberals". Simply amazing!

Do the liberals and Democrats really understand the implications of this "gender disparity" myth? They're alleging that all the executives in who knows how many companies are extremely chauvinist and sexist and don't believe women should be paid the same as men. And that they actually do it, risking lawsuits and bad publicity and loss of consumers. Come on! Get a brain, knuckleheads.

The gender income disparity never jived with me. I knew it was a liberal myth from the start. In the 08 election they promoted this idiotic Fair Pay Act, even though there are already FOUR big laws that protect against pay discrimination on the books. If liberals wanna prove to me women are paid less, they should show 2 paychecks checks from employees of identical positions in the same company, one male and the other female. If the female's pay is lower, then I'll start buying it.

i think he is just speaking broadly. have you never heard of people exluding color and referring to all races as the human race? peak out from that rock more often. ;)

He referred to "the human race" at one point, and while I agree with Sowell 99.999999% of the time, it is the human SPECIES, not race. There are many races within the human species.

Men tried to exclude women? What, all men? You sexist prick.

"I can tell you that gender discrimination works both ways. My profession is dominated by women, and we men are often passed over for the best jobs." Oh, it's perfectly fine when the discrimination is against men. It's only an outrage when it's against women. That's just liberal logic 101.

I'm a male elementary school teacher, and I can tell you that gender discrimination works both ways. My profession is dominated by women, and we men are often passed over for the best jobs. I've been in many rural schools where the staff is entirely female, and have been told by male substitute teachers who go into these she-dens that they are often made to feel very uncomfortable. The point is that women do not act any more equitably when the shoe is on the other foot.

For Sowell's thesis to be consistent, he would have to claim that there has historically been no gender or racial discrimination in hiring or pay compensation.

Jimyraynor: Women don't work as hard as men?? Are you kidding?? Women do most of the world's work, most of it unpaid. As for women not wanting the risky jobs ... women have FOUGHT to get those jobs. Just do a bit of research on women trying to enter mining, construction, policing, firefighting, etc. Women do WANT those jobs ... it's just than men have tried to exclude women. And the traditional jobs that women have taken are essential to the functioning of society, but are less valued.
